Robert Payne, whose real name was John Embry, was the publisher of Drummer Magazine from 1975 to 1986. As Payne, he published a two-part magazine called "The Care and Training of the Male Slave." In 1975, he held a mock slave auction in Los Angeles which triggered a massive police raid involving 105 officers, helicopters, and dozens of police cars. Mr. Embry, other men, and one woman were charged with an 1874 statute against trafficking in human slaves - a felony. The charges were dropped once the nature of the event became apparent, but not without some struggle."
